چکیده

The adoption of precision agriculture technologies and site-specific management has been limited in the forest industry. Geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensed imagery have been used in forest management, but at a landscape scale, typically to prescribe and schedule treatments for a diverse collection of relatively large tracts. Individual stands have traditionally been treated uniformly based on their most prevalent characteristics. Sub-stand variability has most often been studied as something for which an efficient inventory sampling strategy can compensate, not as being suggestive of a treatment regime to maximize revenue or ecological benefits. This paper develops a method to generate a site-specific database

Assessing the Suitability of Future Multi- and Hyperspectral Satellite Systems for Mapping the Spatial Distribution of Norway Spruce Timber Volume

The availability of accurate and timely information on timber volume is important for supporting operational forest management. One option is to combine statistical concepts (e.g., small area estimates) with specifically designed terrestrial sampling strategies to provide estimations also on the level of administrative units such as forest districts. This may suffice for economic assessments, b...

Expanding site productivity research to sustain non-timber forest functions

Southern forests produce multiple products and services including timber, wildlife habitat, species bioand genetic diversity, water quality and control, waste remediation, recreation, and carbon sequestration. All of these benefits must be produced in a sustainable manner to meet today’s societal needs without compromising future needs. A forest site is productive to the extent that it provides...

Clearcutting and Site Preparation, but Not Planting, Promoted Early Tree Regeneration in Boreal Alaska

The stand initiation stage decisively influences future forest structure and composition, particularly in the boreal forest which is a stand replacement disturbance driven system. In boreal Alaska, the conventional forest management paradigm has focused on the production of large-dimension timber, particularly white spruce (Picea glauca). However, energy generation and heating from wood is incr...

Forest Management Expenses of Mississippi's Nonindustrial Private Forest Landowners

Detailed information about the forest management expenditures incurred by nonindustrial private forest (NIPF) landowners over time provides a wealth of information about costs associated with forestland ownership, management practices implemented hv NIPF landowners, and changes in management intensity over time. A survey of Mississippi's nonindustrial private forest (NIPF) landowners owning 20 ...

Geostatistically estimation and mapping of forest stock in a natural unmanaged forest in the Caspian region of Iran

Estimation and mapping of forest resources are preconditions for management, planning and research. In this study, we applied kriging interpolation of geostatistics for estimation and mapping of forest stock at-tributes in a natural, uneven-aged, unmanaged forest in the Caspian region of northern Iran. The site of the study has an area of 516 ha and an elevation that ranges from 1100 to 1450 m ...
